No matter how much we try to sentimentalize Christmas, the Bible has a way of bringing us back to the more earthy reality of the birth of Jesus. When the baby was just 8 days old Mary and Joseph met one of the most enigmatic men in the pages of Scripture. Simeon was quite elderly by this time, but years earlier God had promised him that his eyes would not close in death until he had seen the Messiah. How overjoyed he must have been to have held the salvation of the whole world in his hands. But just when the hallmark music starts playing, he turns to Mary and tells her something rather dark- something that will affect her destiny. What was it that would one day break Mary’s heart?
