It is worth noting that, unlike every other section in Judges, none of the characters are named (apart from the priest Phineas, in 20:28). This anonymity is meant to suggest that these men and women stand for all of their “type” in Israel. This is how Levites lived. This is how fathers thought. This is how women were treated. It is a dark picture, which is about to become far darker.
